JIH History

The Journal of Indian History, originating at Allahabad University and later integrating into the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, after transitioning through Madras University and the University of Travancore, has reached a centennial milestone, showcasing resilience through turbulent phases and leaving a lasting legacy with substantial contributions to India’s scholarly realms of history and historiography. Since this institutional transition, the Department of History has been diligently publishing the journal to make substantive contributions to Indian history, unwavering in its dedication to academic excellence. In the post-independence era, the editorial leadership of the journal was entrusted to distinguished history Professors from the University of Kerala, and the newly constituted Department of History of the University of Kerala marked a pivotal era for the Journal of Indian History, during which it achieved new heights in academic distinction. The publication commemorated key milestones in Indian history with the release of the Indian Independence Silver Jubilee Volume, The Golden Jubilee Volume in 1973, a Special Issue in Honour of the World Conference on Malayalam in 1977, the Diamond Jubilee Volume in 1982, the Platinum Jubilee Volume in 2001 and Centenary Volume in 2023. These special issues added depth to the historical narrative and demonstrated the journal’s acute awareness of the pivotal moments in its history. Across its century, the Journal of Indian History has been an observant sentinel, shrewdly observing and contributing to the maturation and refinement of Indian historiography. The editors, comprising eminent historians, have consistently upheld rigorous scholarly standards, ensuring that the journal remains a crucible of intellectual exploration. Innumerable scholars have graced its pages with insightful contributions, solidifying its position as a quintessence of historical inquiry. Reflecting on this illustrious journey, the Journal of Indian History is an enduring testament to an unwavering commitment to scholarly excellence and the nuanced exploration of India’s rich and multifaceted past. Its extensive collections, now accessible in major libraries worldwide, continue to serve as an invaluable resource for those navigating the complex terrain of Indian historical scholarship.

JIH Specific Project

The Department of History at the University of Kerala has initiated a Specific Project titled the Survey, Collection, Digitalization, and Scientific Preservation of the Journal of Indian History from the First Volume to the Centenary Volume. Dr.P. Jinimon, Assistant Professor in the Department, had the honour of leading this project to comprehensively address various aspects of this historical journal, covering the period from its inception to the centennial milestone. An essential component of this endeavour was preparing an index volume involving the creation of abstracts and keywords for each article, starting from the first to the centenary volumes. The comprehensive compilation titled JIH Index Volumes in seven parts spanning from 1921–1922 to 2023, condenses a century’s worth of scholarly contributions. This consolidation greatly facilitates research accessibility, providing a structured overview of the extensive academic output. Moreover, this initiative serves as a bulwark for the academic integrity of JIH, acting as a deterrent against unethical practices like plagiarism and other forms of research misconduct. By offering a systematic reference for researchers and scholars, these index volumes not only honor the scholarly heritage of JIH but also uphold the standards of academic rigor and ethical conduct within the field. The forthcoming book, History of the Journal of Indian History, represents a scholarly milestone, presenting a comprehensive examination of the global historical significance of the Journal of Indian History. It meticulously enquires into the journal’s pioneering role as the first academic publication on history, highlighting its unique scholarly exploration in the absence of similar works dedicated to journal history. The book offers a detailed analysis of historiography and the evolution of 2 historical research, providing a nuanced understanding of the journal’s profound contributions to the discipline. The publication’s adherence to high academic standards illuminates the Journal of Indian History’s pivotal role in shaping historical discourse within India and beyond. The project envisions publishing the Accumulated Index to the Journal of Indian History, (1921/22-2023) offering a comprehensive index spanning a century of historical scholarship to researchers and historians. Another initiative is the preparation and publication of Selected Themes from the Journal of Indian History, a compilation of various historical themes published in previous journal volumes. In pursuit of scientific preservation, the project actively digitises and beautifies soft copies of the earlier volumes of the JIH. This process ensures preserving historical knowledge in a format compatible with contemporary research methodologies. The team has procured all volumes of JIH from various libraries in India, demonstrating a commitment to creating a comprehensive archive. A significant aspect of the project involves preparing and publishing diverse materials. Efforts have culminated in the publication of the Centenary Volume, involving an arduous task that included gathering articles, peer-review processes, and copy-editing. The project has achieved substantial outcomes, including procuring all the volumes of the JIH. In search for the back volumes, Research Assistants Dr.A.W. Giftson, Dr.Leninlal. M, Arun P.S., Dr. Chinthu. I.B, and Dr.Ashik Pradeep.V visited various repositories such as the National Archives, Delhi University Arts Block Library, Archaeological Survey of India, and the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library in New Delhi; Ram Mohan Library and State Central Library in Kolkata; Osmania University Library; Telangana State Archives; Hyderabad Central University; State Central Library at AfzalGunj; Telangana State Archives; and the Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh. Dr.Safeed.R., for the JIH Specific Project, successfully obtained the journal’s first volume from the Archaeological Survey of India library and other rare volumes from the Asiatic Society of Bombay. Advice from the National Archives and Kerala State Archives has been sought to preserve earlier volumes. Soft copies of earlier volumes are undergoing beautification for digitisation, and the uploading process is continuing on the Journal of Indian History website. The JIH Specific Project epitomises a scrupulous and all-encompassing strategy in safeguarding, digitising, and imparting historical knowledge, substantially contributing to the scholarly milieu and adhering to rigorous academic benchmarks. These initiatives aim to uphold the extensive intellectual heritage of the Journal of Indian History while also recognizing and celebrating the academic achievements of the University of Kerala and the Department of History on a global scale.
